Old Style Fuse box

Worried about the age of your fuse box in your house? Is too old and no longer complies with regulations? Is it time to swap it with a new consumer unit?

A consumer unit and a fuse box are the same thing. Distributing electric around your home through multiple circuits and instantly disconnecting the power whenever a power overload occurs on one of the circuits, which is known as tripping.

When “tripping” occurs, a consumer unit will disconnect the electricity using the circuit breaker linked to the overloaded circuit. It will automatically turn itself to the OFF position making the faulty circuit easily identifiable. Once the circuit is repaired, the MCB (Miniature Circuit breaker) can be switched back on and the power restored.

An old fuse box uses fuses instead of MCB's (Miniature circuit breakers) Each rewireable fuse contains a wire which will get hot and melt if there is an electrical fault (overload) and make the circuit trip.

It's not as easy to see the circuit at fault when you have a old fuse box like in the picture, fuses are contained inside fuse carrier which you have too manually remove so the melted fuse can be seen and replaced before the power can be restored.
Consumer units are the modern safer version of fuse boxes the latter being no longer compliant with current electrical regulations.

If your house is fitted with an old fuse box, it might be time to for you to replace it.
