Your Old Downlights May Not Be Fire Rated

Are You're Downlights Fire Rated?

Pictured* is a old downlight fitting offering minimal to No protection for the spread of fire.

In the event of a fire, the downlight hole can allow the fire to spread to the next floor or across the loft space within the structure of the house, But if fire rated downlights are installed this would dramatically slow down the spread of fire. A fire rated downlight helps seal off the hole and slow the spread of the fire. Most of them are rated at 30, 60, or 90 minutes.

Modern Fire-rated fittings generally have a steel can or cover on the top with small holes of a certain size so to still allow the bulb to dissipate heat. They also contain a sheet of intumescent material that will expand to form a seal in the event of fire, which covers the ceiling hole to stop the passage of smoke and flames to the void above.

If you are unsure of the type of downlights you have then call KH Electrical Pocklington for a free check and estimate to put them right.
